About ALGON

ALGON was established in 1999 as a non-governmental, non-partisan organization shortly after Nigeria transitioned to democracy. The association was born out of the need to strengthen local government administration and create a unified voice to advocate for the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of local governments.

Since its inception, ALGON has aimed to address challenges faced by local councils, ensuring they contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development.

OBJECTIVES

  • Promote and protect the interests, rights, privileges and autonomy of Local Government at all times.
  • Encourage Local Governments execute the functions constitutionally assigned to them efficiently and effectively.
  • Promote and encourage professionalism in Local Government services and contribute towards the improvement of Local Government administration and services.
  • Provide a forum for discussion among members and with other relevant bodies on matters of interest to Local Governments.
  • Express the views/opinions of Local Government on Federal/State Government policies/legislation affecting them as well as on other Local Government issues of national and global concerns.
  • Offer advisory services to members and disseminate information on matters of importance to Local Government.
  • Encourage investigation and research into matters relating to Local Government

Structure of ALGON

ALGON is structured to include all the 774 local government councils in Nigeria, which makes it one of the most inclusive and representative organizations in the country. It operates through elected officials such as chairpersons and councilors of local governments, who are members of the association. ALGON also has a National Executive Council (NEC), which oversees its activities and ensures effective coordination.

The NEC includes:

  • National President: Serves as the overall leader of the association and represents ALGON at national and international levels.
  • Vice Presidents: Represent different geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
  • Secretary-General: Handles administrative functions.
  • Other executive members, including treasurers and public relations officers.

ALGON’s Contributions to National Development

Despite the challenges, ALGON has recorded notable achievements in advancing local government administration and contributing to Nigeria’s overall development:

  1. Improved Advocacy for Local Government Autonomy: ALGON has consistently pushed for constitutional amendments to grant local governments full autonomy. Although progress has been slow, the association’s efforts have kept the issue on the national agenda.
  2. Fostering Unity Among Local Governments: By creating a platform for collaboration, ALGON has fostered unity among local councils, enabling them to share best practices and jointly address common challenges.
  3. International Recognition: ALGON has partnered with international organizations and participated in global forums to exchange ideas on local governance and development.
  4. Promoting Grassroots Initiatives: Through its initiatives, ALGON has encouraged local governments to implement programs that directly impact citizens, such as community health programs, rural electrification, and agricultural development.
