The African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS), through the ARISE Project Advancing Responsible and Gender-Inclusive AI Capacity in Africa’s Higher Education Ecosystem—has announced applications for PhD scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The programme is designed to strengthen Africa’s AI research ecosystem by supporting scholars committed to responsible, ethical, and gender-inclusive AI research that aligns with Africa’s development priorities. Selected researchers will contribute innovative solutions across key sectors while building advanced AI expertise across the continent.

Overview of ARISE AI Opportunities

The ARISE Project supports Africa-based researchers working on AI applications in critical sectors such as agriculture, climate change, energy, health, the digital economy, and creative industries. Successful applicants will benefit from research funding, mentorship, and opportunities to participate in international AI conferences and professional development programmes.

Available Awards

  • PhD Scholarships: 10 awards for doctoral candidates enrolled in African universities
  • Postdoctoral Fellowships: 6 awards hosted by African institutions engaged in AI research

PhD Scholarships in Artificial Intelligence

The PhD scholarships aim to strengthen Africa’s AI research capacity by supporting doctoral students conducting responsible and gender-responsive AI research.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be African nationals or permanent residents living in Africa

  • Be enrolled or accepted into a PhD programme at an accredited African institution

  • Conduct research aligned with responsible AI within ATPS thematic areas

  • Demonstrate commitment to ethical AI, equity, inclusion, and gender responsiveness

  • Possess a strong academic record, including a Master’s degree and relevant publications or innovations

  • Clearly show how their research addresses AI skills gaps in Africa

Candidates must submit:

  • A detailed research proposal (maximum of 8 pages)

  • Academic transcripts, CV, and two recommendation letters

  • Proof of PhD enrolment or admission

  • Evidence of responsible and inclusive AI approaches

Postdoctoral Fellowships in Artificial Intelligence

The postdoctoral fellowships aim to support advanced AI research that addresses Africa’s social and economic challenges through innovative AI solutions.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be African nationals or permanent residents in Africa

  • Hold a PhD in an AI-related field obtained within the last five years

  • Be hosted by a recognised African institution involved in AI research

  • Demonstrate strong publication records and high-impact research potential

  • Show commitment to ethical and gender-inclusive AI

  • Be available for the fellowship duration and willing to relocate if required
