CITAD Launches Digital Skills Programme to Empower Women in Northern Nigeria
The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has unveiled a new initiative focused on bridging the gender gap in digital access while creating economic opportunities for women in Northern Nigeria. The programme is part of a broader effort to equip women with the tools needed to succeed in an increasingly digital world.

Known as Addressing the Gender Digital Divide and Expanding Business Opportunities for Women in Northern Nigeria (Agenda-WINNIG), the project is tailored to provide women and girls with practical digital skills that can enhance their participation in the modern economy.
Programme Launch
The initiative was introduced during a series of town hall meetings held across the three senatorial zones of Kano State. These engagements took place in:
- Rano (Kano South)
- Bichi (Kano North)
- Kano Municipal (Kano Central)
The sessions brought together community leaders, women’s groups, and young people, creating awareness about the programme and its expected impact.

Focus and Duration of the Agenda-WINNIG Project
According to the Project Officer, Fatima Babakura, the programme will run for a period of 18 months and will be implemented in both Kano and Bauchi states. The primary objective is to tackle the ongoing disparity in digital skills and access between men and women in the region.
She emphasized that the initiative is designed to empower women by providing them with relevant and marketable digital competencies.

Eligibility:
The initiative is structured to accommodate women from diverse educational backgrounds, including:
- Secondary school students
- Women who did not complete formal education
- Graduates and highly educated women
This inclusive approach ensures that no group is left behind in the digital transformation journey.
By equipping women with practical digital knowledge, the project is expected to significantly improve financial independence and reduce unemployment among women in Northern Nigeria. It will also enhance their ability to participate in online business and remote work opportunities.
Stakeholders present at the town hall meetings praised the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention to address gender inequality in digital access and economic participation.
