Yobe Approves Automatic Employment for Nursing Graduates
Governor Mai Mala Buni has approved automatic employment for 416 graduates of Shehu Sule College of Nursing Sciences, a strategic move aimed at improving healthcare services across Yobe State. Why the Government Took This Step
The decision highlights the state government’s ongoing investment in the health sector and its commitment to addressing the shortage of skilled healthcare workers. According to the governor, continuous support for the institution over the past seven years has significantly improved the training of qualified professionals.
By offering automatic employment, the government aims to quickly deploy trained personnel to hospitals and health centres, ensuring better service delivery for residents.

Government’s Commitment to Healthcare Development
Governor Buni revealed that over 3,500 healthcare workers have been recruited in recent years, many of them graduates from the same college. This effort is part of a broader strategy to maintain high professional standards and ensure adequate staffing across the state.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing healthcare, emphasizing the goal of building a people-centered and efficient health system.

The newly approved employment covers three key categories of healthcare professionals:
- 158 Community Nurses
- 196 Basic Nurses and Midwives
- 62 Higher National Diploma (HND) Nursing Graduates
This distribution underscores the state’s strong focus on nursing and midwifery as essential pillars of healthcare delivery.
Additional Developments in the Health Sector
At the event, the governor also highlighted the establishment of a Biomedical Research and Training Centre at the state university. This initiative is designed to boost research capacity and support the development of future medical professionals.
He further assured the college of continued government support, with plans to position it as a leading health training institution in Nigeria. The outgoing provost, Hadiza Sabo, was commended for maintaining high academic standards.
Yobe Recognized for Primary Healthcare Excellence
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Mohammed Lawan Gana, revealed that Yobe State was recently ranked as the best-performing state in primary healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
The recognition, conducted under an initiative by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum in collaboration with the Federal Government, earned the state a $1.2 million reward.
The college has maintained an impressive record, graduating 1,485 students between 2019 and 2026 all of whom received automatic employment. This consistent approach has significantly improved the recruitment, deployment, and retention of healthcare workers in the state.
