Apply Carnegie Mellon University Africa Business Incubation Program 2026 for African Tech Startups

Applications are now open for the Carnegie Mellon University Africa Business Incubation Program, a 12-month opportunity designed to help African tech founders grow and scale innovative startups across the continent.

The program supports early-stage startups that already have a proof-of-concept prototype and some level of market validation. Selected startups will receive mentorship, business support, and guidance aimed at helping them build revenue-generating products capable of attracting future investment.

About the Program

The Business Incubation Program focuses on helping startups move from the prototype stage to a scalable and investment-ready business. Participants will work on refining their business models, validating market opportunities, improving product development, and positioning their ventures for long-term growth. The goal is for startups to complete the program with:

Program benefits

  • $50,000 USD in seed funding from CMU-Africa
  • 12 months of targeted advisory support from experienced practitioners across product, growth, compliance, and investment to drive revenue, scale, and investor readiness.
  • $5,000 in AWS credits and $1,500 in Amazon technical support
  • Introductions to angel investors, VCs firms, and partners in Africa and Pittsburgh
  • Opportunity to connect CMU-Africa’s partner ecosystem across Africa
  • Connection to global entrepreneurship networks, including startups and industry partners at CMU’s Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship in Pittsburgh

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, startups must be less than two years old and meet the following conditions at the time of application:

  • Build a scalable, tech-enabled solution solving a clearly defined market problem in Africa
  • Have a proof-of-concept prototype with early validation
  • Show a clear path to profitability, scalability, and inclusive impact
  • Demonstrate strong market understanding and a credible business model
  • Be led by at least two committed co-founders who can participate full-time in the venture and the program
  • Be a registered company

Startups That Are Not Eligible

The program will not consider:

  • Marketplace or e-commerce middleman platforms
  • Late-stage startups already generating consistent revenue and raising significant capital
  • Startups without job creation potential
  • Non-tech startups
  • Startups without functional prototypes
  • Startups that have participated in more than two similar programs within the past 12 months

All applications must be fully completed and submitted by the deadline
Written applications will be reviewed by the selection committee, and the strongest applicants will be invited to pitch virtually. Check: Evaluation criteria for applications.
The startups selected to enter the Innovation Hub will be notified by May 29
Admitted startups must confirm their desire to participate by June 5
The incubation program begins on July 13
